Psalm 47:7

“For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise.” (Psalm 47:7). One of the most simple truths stated over and over again in Scripture is the God is ruling over all of the earth. This means He is even ruling over the people of the earth. It is easy to look at our world with its violence, sexual immorality, idolatry and pain, and to think that God is no more than a helpless onlooker. But God is not only King, He is also actively ‘kinging’. There is no limit to the reach of His reign. The hard thing for us to perceive is how He uses evil to bring about His purposes. Peter said in Acts 4, “Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.” Even in the horror of the crucifixion of God’s Son, He was bringing about His good purposes – He was in control. One thing we can be sure of in His Kingship – He is ruling with us in mind. He is always at work for the good of His children, even through our hardships. This should bring us great comfort in a world of turmoil. It’s out of our control, but not His!
